Community Clean Up - Little Androscoggin River

On Sunday, June 8th, the Sebago Chapter of TU and Maine Fly Guys organized a volunteer day at a few locations along the Little Androscoggin River.

Aside from the obvious recollections of time spent fishing on this much-loved river, everyone was gathered to pick up trash, tires, and debris as the group worked to clean up a stretch of this river in Auburn, Maine.

This was a passion project for Greg LaBonte, our Events Chair and owner of Maine Fly Guys. Greg grew up fishing the Little Andro, and he has hopes that it will one day look like the river he remembers. While picking up trash is a way to help the river directly, he knows it also helps foster a connection to the river that makes more people passionate about seeing it returned to a thriving ecosystem.

You can hear more from Greg about why this river needs our help in this video from News Center Maine that showcases the group’s river cleanup efforts.

And if you’re interested in joining Sebago TU for a river cleanup, check our Events Page for more events like this and other ways to get involved with waters across southern Maine.

This is just a small piece of the puzzle to bring back the Little Androscoggin to its former glory.

With the town of Auburn preparing for the removal of the Littlefield Dam in the summer of 2026, there’s hope that the Little Andro can return to a cleaner, free-flowing river that’s more accessible to Atlantic Salmon and other migratory fish.

But…that will require even more restoration work downstream, as there are a number of other dams still impeding access to upstream habitat for fish.

And yes, some of those dams have fish passage, but that’s not always effective, as this video with engineer David Huntress points out.
